Conservación de Germoplasma in Vitro

Abstract

Desde sus inicios, el hombre ha dependido básicamente de los vegetales como fuente de energía. Al aumentar rápidamente la población, se ha hecho necesario implantar técnicas de explotación, en particular agropecuarias, que han contribuido a la destrucción de las poblaciones pioneras vegetales que fueron producto de siglos de evolución. Por otro lado, las técnicas modernas de producción de variedades mejoradas altamente homogéneas han provocado la reducción de la variabilidad genética de las especies cultivadas, ocasionando una “erosión genética”. En este contexto es cuando se recurre a las fuentes genéticas originales de la variabilidad, las que se deben preservar adecuadamente. Cuando se habla de preservación de germoplasma hay que subrayar que el objetivo es conservar, con la mayor integridad posible, la variabilidad genética de las poblaciones seleccionadas.
