Abstract

This research aims to identify the factors that structure representations and practices concerning insecurity. We present here the results of a survey conducted in the city of Buenos Aires in late 2011 and early 2012. We analyze the conditional distribution of the expectation of victimization and perceived safety in different situations, considering the weight of various social, political and cultural influences on the observed variations. We conclude the fear of crime varies not only in terms of actual victimization, but also of exposure to media, political and ideological orientations and lifestyles.
