Abstract

Aristotle states that accidental causes and chance (as a kind of accidental cause) are indeterminate. To the extent that chance is considered as opposed to causal determinism, it is natural to understand this indeterminacy as a causal indeterminacy, and so suggest some interpreters. In this article, I put forward the thesis that the indeterminacy of Aristotelian chance and of accidental causes is not to be understood in a causal sense, but in a way that can be called “epistemological” in so far as it involves the consideration of an accidental causal relation from the universal standpoint of the episteme. Thus, the indeterminacy of chance is more connected to the impossibility of having scientific knowledge of certain (already given) causal relations, than with the impossibility of predicting singular future events.
