Abstract

El estudio de la estructura social, sus características y dinámica, se ha posicionado como un tema de justificada vigencia debido al impacto que las profundas transformaciones en el sistema económico internacional vienen ocasionando en los últimos tiempos a nivel mundial. El foco de atención ha recaído en lo acontecido con la/s clase/s media/s a nivel planetario aunque es posible advertir que las preguntas de investigación que su evolución conlleva son diferentes dependiendo de la región o país de que se trate. Por una parte, el acrecentamiento de sectores medios en un conjunto amplio de países asiáticos y latinoamericanos ha cambiado la fisonomía social a nivel mundial y ha impulsado el interés por aprehender las características de este nuevo contingente social (Kharas, 2010; Ravallion, 2010; Castellani y Parent, 2011; Franco et al, 2011). En la base de tales transformaciones concurren diversos factores entre los que cabe destacar, particularmente, la incorporación al mercado mundial de las superpobladas naciones de China e India con el consiguiente incremento en la demanda a nivel global de productos primarios que ha beneficiado a las economías productoras de América Latina. La suba del producto bruto per cápita ha sido de tal cuantía que ha impactado en los ingresos monetarios de los sectores ubicados históricamente en los estratos de menores recursos y ha provocado el ensanchamiento de las franjas medias de ambas regiones. Tradicionalmente, gran parte de la reflexión acerca de la importancia de una pujante clase media ha estado orientada a ponderar su incidencia en el desarrollo económico y en la consolidación de sociedades democráticas (Easterly, 2001; Easterly et al, 2006).
