In this paper we analyze the anthropological literature about the travesti issue in Latin America, proposing to organize it by its main themes. With a critical approach to a number of ethnographies we suggest that the discipline should consider the political process that local travestis are promoting, focusing on other dimensions of their daily lives, beyond their gender identity and sexuality.
