Abstract

Nanotechnology as applied to medicine has led to the appearance of nanomedicines, which through their complex multimolecular structures have the potential to be designed to improve efficacy while reducing toxicity. At present, there are more than 50 approved nanomedicines, some of which are copies of the innovative ones. However, the design of nanomedicines is becoming more complex, with multiple components and functions which introduce new scenarios that have to be addressed in order to improve their translation to achieve effective clinical application. This chapter tackles the challenges imposed by their complex characterization, due to their particular physico-chemical properties and their interaction with biological systems. Furthermore, we discuss the proposals and ongoing actions to increase efficiency and/or to speed-up the translation of the results from nanomedicine scientific research to the clinical setting
