Abstract

Cristobalia, a new South American genus of Gonolobinae (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae, Asclepiadeae), with two species, one from NW Argentina and SW Bolivia, and the other one known from SE Brazil and NE Argentina, is described and illustrated. There are evidences that Cristobalia is a sister group of Macroscepis H.B.K. s.l., from which differs by campanulate corolla, exserted corona which is pentagonal in outline from above, with interestaminal shallow concave lobes, exserted gynostegium, protruding laminar anther wings, reniform o calceolate pollinia, and fruits fusiform-ellipsoid or fusiform-ovate, hirsute, and muricate. As an additional support to this proposal, a generic key to the Gonolobinae of Austral America is also provided.
