Abstract

The behavioral manifestations in the frontal variant of Frontotemporal Dementia (fvFTD) may be due, first, to an abnormal emotional processing (Rosen et al., 2004), or be consecuence of changes in Social Cognition (Gregory et. al., 2002). The objective is to study the presence of alterations in facial recognition of basic emotions (FRBE) in fvFTD. Using 60 photographs from the set Pictures of Facial Affect (Ekman & Friesen, 1976) a battery was administered for FRBE comprising three tasks, Selection, Mating and Naming. The results showed that 71% of patients showed alterations in FRBE. The battery administered as a whole showed a sensitivity of 71.42% and a specificity of 93.75%. The finding of alterations in FRBE in this population is consistent with the literature (Snowden, 2008). The Naming task, although most often used, proved to be less sensitive than the assessment of FRBE by multiple tasks.
