Cultura y hegemonía en el capitalismo contemporáneo: Sobre la necesidad de una mirada crítica en los estudios culturales latinoamericanos

Abstract

Recientemente la importancia de la cultura en la dinámica económica se ha vuelto decisiva, algo evidenciado en la cada vez más común apelación a la llamada economía creativa en las políticas públicas de la región. Esta mutación revitaliza el vínculo entre la producción simbólica y la reproducción de las desigualdades y, por tanto, supone un nuevo desafío para los estudios culturales en América Latina, cuyos análisis han tendido a desestimar la dimensión económica creyendo así restituir a la cultura su potencial transformador. El presente trabajo tiene el objetivo de proponer una actualización de los estudios culturales en el nuevo momento histórico de la cultura discutiendo algunas de las categorías teóricas utilizadas en abordajes latinoamericanos. Entre ellas, la de hegemonía resulta central, tanto por su capacidad para reconocer y comprender el conflicto como para articular la cultura y la economía. Se concluye que la actualidad de la cultura exige abordar la relación entre la totalidad social y los fenómenos culturales, ante lo cual proponemos recuperar la categoría de formación social y la dimensión material de la hegemonía como herramientas teóricas para revitalizar la crítica en los estudios culturales.
