Abstract

From a Social Psychology perspective, this work is going to try to understand adult´s attitudes towards people who are in prison, attending to the importance of generating positive attitudes towards them, for the purpose of a better social integration. Imprisoned people, prosecuted or convicted, are subject to the last legitimate measure that goverment can use to prevent crime: Jail. Many laws, International treaties, and penitenciary aim at social rehabilitation of these people, improving the capacity to comprehend and respect law in order to come back to community and to function harmoniously in it. But for this, the collaboration of society that actively participates in the reception and re-insertion of the individual is needed. Negative or discriminatory attitudes also than prejudice, act as a deterrent of the aforementioned process, providing feedback to the exclusion, in turn, greatly influences the development of violent and antisocial behavior. A survey consisting in three scales and a section with personal data was administrated to 118 subjects between 20 and 40 years old, from Buenos Aires and La Plata Area. The 50,8% possessed contact with prisoners and the remaining 49.2% did not possess. A favorable attitude towards prisoners was found, and besides that contact makes differences in perception and will contact them. Also, some results show the importance in attitudes not only in the contact but also in the vinculation degree, gender, subjective social class and religiosity level do have.
