El pliegue fantasmagórico de la industria cultural

Abstract

Even though the paradigmatic formulation of the theory of cultural industry was developed by Adorno (and Horkheimer) in Dialectic of Enlightenment (1944/47), an accurate examination cannot reduce its scope to such a limited space. In fact, the reception of this theory in the current political and academic discussions can be understood by this excesive reduction of the textual corpus. It can explain the general misunderstanding at the time of evaluating its explanatory capability and its potentiality to interpret the cultural ideology of the contemporary world. The present article is intended to revise such deficit by examining the internal structure of cultural industry. In order to do so, this paper analyses the concept of phantasmagoria as it is used by Adorno. The conclusions will comment briefly on how Adorno’s interpretation leads to challenges regarding the place of art in contemporary culture.
