Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze several forms of value appropriation in commercial circulation that can be found in peasant markets in late medieval Castile. The analysis pays particular attention to political, social and economic conditions which enabled the development of these forms of accumulation and to the relations between them. First, we study the features of the resale of use-values, which is considered the simplest or primary form of commercial appropriation. Then, we successively examine more complex methods: frauds involving weights and measures; commodity hoarding; buying and selling on credit; usury. Our findings stress the foundation of these forms of exploitation on the characteristics of peasant economy in late feudalism and their contradictory effects on social reproduction.
