Abstract

As the Argentine film industry developed during the 1930s, the State and other actors in the field sought to define the characteristics of national cinema and to shape audience tastes. Specialist magazines of the period played a central role in this process. Heraldo del Cinematografista, one of the most important publications, aimed to intervene on both a commercial and a cultural level, and debated state projects. Discussions about what should or should not be censored, and about the good or bad taste of popular audiences, were key to the wider debate about what Argentine cinema should be, and what kind of audiences it should address.
