Reptiles marinos jurásicos de la cuenca Neuquina

Abstract

La cuenca Neuquina, una de las mayores productoras de hidrocarburos en la porción austral de América del Sur, está localizada al este de los Andes en el norte de la Patagonia. Cubre un área de más de 120.000 km2 en el oeste central de la Argentina y contiene un registro estratigráfico de 6.000 metros de espesor con edades que van desde el Triásico al Paleógeno. La sucesión sedimentaria incluye facies continentales y marinas siliciclásticas, carbonáticas y evaporíticas convirtiendo a la cuenca en un excelente laboratorio de campo para la realización de un análisis sedimentológico, estratigráfico secuencial y tectónico detallado. Asimismo, su relleno sedimentario contiene uno de los más completos registros fosilíferos marinos del intervalo Jurásico-Cretácico Temprano y algunos de los yacimientos de dinosaurios más reconocidos del mundo.
