Abstract

The Inca state expanded southwards up to the current province of Mendoza, where it incorporated the central-northern region. The proposed chronology of the annexation of this region to the Tawantinsuyu ranges between ca. 1380 and 1480 AD. In order to contribute to building knowledge on this subject, the analysis of the 29 14C dates available for the Inca period was carried out, and a reliability scale was developed for the use of such data, based on the level of information on the dated samples and their contextual association. The results suggest that the annexation process reached Mendoza relatively late. This article presents the evaluation of local dates and the discussion of the results within the framework of regional archaeological knowledge and previous proposals on the subject.
