In "On Religious Belief," Wittgenstein develops an in-depth analysis of the unique and distinctive nature of religious belief. There Wittgenstein affirms that it should not be understood as ordinary belief, since, unlike the latter, religious belief is not subject to error, evaluation or interpretation. This, Wittgenstein maintains, is unshakeable. Likewise, he maintains that the religious subject cannot enter into a contradiction with those who deny the truth of their beliefs, since, in Wittgenstein's opinion, religious belief is incommensurable. The present work aims to systematically reconstruct Wittgenstein's main theses on the nature of religious belief and to make two criticisms of the conception defended by Wittgenstein.
