Abstract

Definir Europa central no es una tarea sencilla. La historia geopolítica del siglo XX ha influido notablemente en la percepción que el resto de mundo tiene de dicho espacio geográfico: sus límites no resultan claros para el público en general y tampoco para muchos integrantes del ámbito académico, en especial para aquellos que, por diversas razones (culturales, históricas, ideológicas) se sienten alejados de un espacio relativamente desconocido o desconcertados a causa de sus particularidades. En numerosas ocasiones, Europa central remite en el imaginario a un área que en realidad se corresponde más acertadamente con Europa oriental, o bien a definir a territorios como los de Polonia o Chequia como europeo-orientales ‒un hecho distante de la autopercepción de sus habitantes y de los determinantes geográficos‒. A lo largo de las últimas décadas se ha intentado establecer delimitaciones conceptuales certeras en torno a este asunto, aunque no siempre con resultados exitosos, puesto que no se ha arribado a un acuerdo unánime respecto a cuáles son los elementos que definen a Europa central. En términos generales, la región incluye los actuales estados de Alemania, Austria, República Checa, Hungría, Austria, Polonia, Eslovaquia, pero también Liechtenstein, Suiza, Croacia, Eslovenia o los países bálticos (Lituania, Letonia, Estonia).
