Relaciones biológicas entre la Puna de Jujuy (Argentina) y San Pedro de Atacama (Chile)

Abstract

The aim of this work is to establish biological relationships between prehistoric populations of San Pedro de Atacama (SPA) of northern Chile and the Puna de Jujuy (PJ) of northwestern Argentina, using skull metric traits. The sample includes 878 adult skulls of both sexes and artificially deformed and non-deformed. Individuals of the PJ belong to the Late period, and individuals of SPA to the Early, Middle and Late periods. Different techniques of multivariate statistical analysis (discriminant analysis, biological distances between groups, cluster analysis) were applied. The results show phenotypic similarity between Queta (PJ) and Catarpe, Late Quitor and Late Yaye (SPA) and between Catarpe (SPA) and Rio Negro and Doncelllas (PJ). Undoubtedly, relations between the Puna de Jujuy and San Pedro de Atacama existed in all periods but the evidence suggests that became more intense in later times.
