Luces y sombras del turismo religioso

Luces y sombras del turismo religioso

Abstract

If there is a topic that has been used without questioning in the geographical studies of tourism is religious tourism. This polysemic category has been earning its place from a perspective that emphasized the subject’s profiles and the religious motivations that moved them from the daily spaces (assumed as profane) to religious sites (understood as sacred). All this, also dyed by a strong Catholic slant that assimilated the idea of religious tourism with Catholic tourism. The changes of the interpretative diagram emerged from the cultural views of the Social Sciences in general, and of the Geography in particular, forced to question these paradigms. The gold of this paper is to review these historical perspectives, question them and set a new interpretation of a rich, complex and multidimensional phenomenon.
