The article discusses the economic mainstream assumption that the capitalist competition is the necessary vector that explains both the allocation of resources and the success of large transnational corporations. For this purpose, the constitution of the international oil cartel of the Seven Sisters between 1911 and 1973 is studied, because of the evidence provided by a case study, often, has questioning effects of theory (Lijphart, 1971). The main contribution of the article argues that, based on a long-term analysis, the logic of appropriation of oil income in the international market is explained by the relationship between a particular form of State intervention associated with the economic behavior of the large companies in the sector, prone to avoid capitalist market competition.
