Abstract

The present work attempts to analyze the scopes and possibilities of a non-predicative language as an expression of excess from a series of reflections offered by the phenomenology of Jean-Luc Marion. This issue will be approached from two moments. First, and in order to specifically show Marion’s proposal on this subject, we will address his analysis of Dionyisius the Areopagite´s mysticism, emphasizing both his reading of the Dionysian praise (ὑμνεῖν) in De divinis nominibus present in L´idole et la distance (1977), as in his interpretation of Dionysian mystical theology as a “pragmatic theology of absence” (théologie pragmatique de l’absence) in De surcroît (2001). Secondly, and in an attempt to broaden the canon of thinkers who have addressed the problem of non-predicative language, we propose to think about this problem in young Nietzsche from a study of the notion of truth (Wahrheit) as a metaphor (Metapher) present in his work Über Wahrheit und Lüge im aussermoralischen Sinne (1872), as we maintain that this language of metaphors reveals an instance prior to all preaching. Finally, thirdly we will try to indicate how the proposals of Dionysius the Areopagite and Nietzsche, although in various ways, can be considered as ways of naming the excess of “what is given” (le donné).
