Abstract

La demanda mundial de energía aumenta en forma sostenida impulsada no solo por el crecimiento de la población sino también por la mayor dependencia de la sociedad de la electricidad. Con excepción de 2020, y quizá 2021, en ambos casos por causa de la pandemia de COVID-19 que llevó a confinamientos, restricciones de movilidad y caída de la actividad económica, la tendencia de la demanda es alcista. Según las perspectivas de la Agencia Internacional de la Energía (AIE), en su publicación de prospectiva energética, el World Energy Outlook de 2020, el consumo mundial de energía recuperará los niveles pre-COVID-19 entre 2022 y 2025 –dependiendo si la recuperación económica es lenta o rápida– y a partir de entonces aumentará a un ritmo de poco más del 1% anual. Eso significa que para 2050 el consumo mundial de energía crecerá más de 30%, lo que equivale a añadir la demanda energética de otra China y otra India al consumo mundial registrado en 2019. Si esta nueva demanda se satisface con combustibles fósiles tradicionales, se agravará la contaminación ambiental que su consumo provoca y aumentarán los efectos sobre el clima.
