Abstract

Los ecosistemas de Lagunas de Altura de la Puna Andina (LAPAs) son sistemas de lagunas de escasa profundidad casi inexploradas y distribuidos en la Ecorregión de la Puna y Altos Andes en Sudamérica a altitudes que van desde 3000 a los 6000 metros sobre el nivel del mar (m snm). Poco estudiadas y en ambientes de difícil acceso, las LAPAs (Fig. 1) han ido revelando poco a poco sus secretos, los cuales incluyen una microbiota altamente diversa, asombrosa y particularmente resistente a condiciones denominadas “extremas” ya que el hombre no es capaz de sobrevivir ante esas mismas situaciones. En este trabajo describimos en forma general las características únicas de los microorganismos y moléculas que allí proliferan y exploramos las potenciales aplicaciones biotecnológicas de este tesoro microbiológico transcendental. Debido a la riqueza mineral y genética de estos ambientes deben ser preservados para las futuras generaciones ante las inminentes amenazas de explotaciones comerciales descontroladas que ponen en riesgo su preservación.
