Sistemas de codificación de expresiones faciales

Abstract

Facial expressions are defined as a pattern or configuration of behaviour, such as smiling or frowning, that denotes the person’s emotion. Considering the large number of empirical studies that investigate the production of facial expressions, the present work aims to review the methodologies and coding systems involved in such investigations. It is intended to describe and compare these techniques according to their functionality and practicality of application. It is important to note that, although faces provide emotional information, their meaning is constructed from the context in which they are inserted. Besides, people infer this meaning not only from facial movement but also from social information, which is decisive for a correct interpretation. The need to develop systems of descriptive indicators is highlighted, that is, they do not try to assign valence and emotion to the expression but simply register the behaviour. This behaviour can then be interpreted based on the context and demand of the task. Besides, it is considered essential to highlight that many techniques for evaluating emotional expressions, especially the computerised ones and those involving electromyography equipment, are very little ecological and expensive. It would be advantageous to develop new techniques that effectively evaluate facial expressions in various contexts outside the laboratory.
