Abstract

Abstract: Borges’ essay “The Argentine Writer and Tradition” is a key text for contemporary readings of his work. It is also considered a landmark in the historical controversy over the notion of a national literature, and has been called on to offer solutions for the modernization or emancipation of peripheral literatures. In this article I argue that this essay’s centrality is substantially more recent than is usually assumed. The essay’s first reception was to a large extent negative and did not revolve around its ostensible target–i.e. cultural nationalism–but rather indicted the relationship between the art of writing and the geopolitics of culture that it entails. Many people thought at the time that it was born old; since then it has ceaselessly rejuvenated. This temporal disjuncture bears witness to cultural transformations which do not stem from the text itself but rather explain its ascent. Given what is at issue in it, as well as the dramatic transformation of its author’s global standing, to follow the critical trajectory of this short, brilliant, and somewhat anomalous essay offers a lens into the relationship between changes in literary circulation and overarching transformations in the cultural imaginary.
