El artículo repasa la evolución conceptual que recibió el patronazgo en las investigaciones de la República romana en torno a dos cuestiones: los vínculos clientelares entre plebe y facciones dominantes y la organización imperial. Estos dos campos de estudio son comparados en términos de qué rasgos adjudican al rol del cliente y a la diferencia entre el patronazgo y lo legal/formal.
The article considers the conceptual evolution of patronage in relation to the Roman Republic in terms of two topics: the patronizing bonds between the plebs and the dominant factions and the imperial organization. Both these study fields are compared in terms of the characteristic they give to the client and the difference between patronage and legality.
