Abstract

I start with a brief contextualization of the discipline of comparative literature, emphasizing three signs of its institutionalization in Argentina. Within the debates of the discipline, I am interested in one of the last episodes that revived it, for which I focus on two short texts, one by Pascale Casanova and the other by Franco Moretti, and I review its key elements (in one case: international literary space, literary domination, and literary capital; in the other: distant reading, laws of literary evolution, and metaphorical models to analyze expansions and specifications of literary phenomena). In my interpretation, I highlight two theses. First, the identification of two different (although complementary) projects of sociology of literature, since they have inverse analytical methodologies: Casanova starts from the practices to explain literary forms, while, according to Moretti, it is essential to investigate the forms, and, only through them, to replace the signs of the struggles. Second, I observe a significant support in precise segments of the traditional nucleus of sociological theory, but with different selections in each author: Bourdieu and the explanatory matrix of the struggle in the case of Casanova, and, in the case of Moretti, British cultural Marxism and Weber’s sociological methodology.
