Abstract

The paper introduces the problem of phenomenal consciousness in non-human animals. It firstly describes how modern philosophy understood mind and consciousness and the anti-cartesian reaction in the twentieth century. Then it reviews the cognitivist turn in the second half of that century and the renewed interest in the phenomenal consciousness in philosophy. It thirdly clarifies some relevant distinctions in the contemporary debate regarding different kinds of consciousness. It highlights the possibility of unconscious abilities in the realms of perception and action. It fourthly reviews several theories of phenomenal consciousness and their potential flaws. Finally, it indicates that the debate is still ongoing and that it has practical relevance regarding our moral duties toward nonhuman species.
