Epicuro

Abstract

En el presente libro nos dedicaremos a exponer la obra de uno de los filósofos griegos cuyo pensamiento sigue resonando en la actualidad. Identificado como uno de los referentes del hedonismo, Epicuro fue un pensador comprometido con la consecución de las metas que su filosofía pregona: alcanzar una felicidad entendida como la obtención de la mayor cantidad de placer posible y la evitación de la mayor cantidad de dolor, tanto en el cuerpo como en el alma. La irrupción de Epicuro en la escena filosófica ateniense resultó, sin dudas, renovadora frente a referentes como Sócrates, Platón o Aristóteles. Según veremos, tras la caída del sistema político-cultural de la ciudad-estado griega, la pólis, Epicuro se diferencia tanto de sus antecesores que es posible considerarlo parte de algo así como una "revuelta" filosófica. Basta con ver, a modo de anticipo y resumen, las siguientes palabras de Ateneo, escritor del siglo II d.C.: Recordaré al más amigo de la verdad, Epicuro, quien era considerado feliz por no haber sido iniciado en la educación ordinaria. A quienes se acercaban a la filosofía de modo semejante, les acercó estas palabras: "Te considero feliz porque, puro de toda educación, te aproximas a la filosofía" (fr. 117).
