Abstract

This article examines alternative estimates of the prevalence of induced abortion in Argentina. The estimates were made using methodologies appropriate to situations in which, as in this case, induced abortion is illegal. One of the methods (designed by S. Singh and D. Wulf) is to extrapolate from the number of women leaving hospital following treatment for complications from abortion. The other (proposed by H. Johnston and K. Hill) is based on the Bongaarts model which compares observed real fertility with potential fertility, the prevalence of free unions, use of contraceptive methods, abortion and postpartum infertility (the four major proximate determinants). Since these are indirect estimates, the intention is to present a range of values within which the real number of abortions lies, and to detail the scientific basis of each estimate so that it can be examined and replicated.
