El (des)conocimiento (del pasado) y el temor del dêmos: De la expedición a Sicilia al golpe de los Cuatrocientos pasando por el tiranicidio

Abstract

En el artículo, en un primer momento, se analiza de modo general la forma en el que el miedo aparece en la obra de Tucídides. En una segunda instancia, se estudia cómo la desconfianza entre los ciudadanos, el temor y el (des)conocimiento se van entrelazando en el texto del historiador en tres momentos de la obra en particular: la expedición a Sicilia, la digresión sobre los Pisistrátidas y el golpe oligárquico del 411. Finalmente, se relaciona el tema con los debates historiográficos llevados adelante recientemente en torno a las características de la pólis griega antigua. Tomando en cuenta los modos en los que las ciudades garantizaban el orden y el control social interno, propondremos que la confianza del dêmos en sí mismo, el control de su miedo y el conocimiento de la situación fueron elementos determinantes para la estabilidad de la democracia al tratarse la pólis de una organización sociopolítica que carecía de capacidades coercitivas independientes de aquellas que podía ejercer su cuerpo político colectivame.
