De la fraternidad a la propiedad y viceversa: reflexiones en torno a la igualibertad de Ètienne Balibar

Abstract

Cuando la polvareda de la caída del Muro de Berlín aún no se había disipado y en el marco de la conmemoración del bicentenario de la Revolución francesa, Ètienne Balibar produjo un influyente ensayo en el cual proponía una doble identificación: la del hombre y el ciudadano y, de manera aún más audaz, la de la libertad y la igualdad. A contramano del viejo arte liberal de separar, Balibar pretendía explicitar una proposición que, a su juicio, venía dictada desde el momento mismo de la redacción de los documentos fundacionales de la Revolución francesa: la proposición de la igualibertad [l’égaliberté]. Esta fórmula conceptual, a su vez, permitía dibujar una novedosa topografía de los campos ideológicos modernos, dentro de la cual encontraba un lugar muy preciso, otro de los pilares de la revolución: la fraternidad, un término muchas veces desechado por su vaguedad, por su aparente indeterminación, por sus resonancias sentimentales. Pero a la luz de esta topografía balibariana, la fraternidad no sólo cobra un sentido específico sino que, además, permite analizar el lugar que ocupa en el pensamiento de autores clave de la filosofía política contemporánea, tales los casos de John Rawls, el gran igualitarista liberal, y de Gerald A. Cohen, un marxista analítico que se convirtió en uno de los más sofisticados exponentes de la reflexión ética en el campo socialista.
