Abstract

En Recuerdos de provincia (1850), D.F. Sarmiento se encargó de forjar el misterio de la cultura indígena huarpe en torno a ciertos tópicos (el oro huarpe, sus tejidos, sus construcciones de influencia incaica, etc.), retomados luego en sucesivos manuales escolares, pero poco apuntó sobre su lengua. Lo poco que conocemos de la extinta habla huarpe nos ha llegado mediado por la doctrina y la mentalidad cristiana: un léxico incompleto de palabras apuntadas por un sacerdote español, el Padre Luis de Valdivia, misionero jesuita que se ocupó en tareas lingüísticas a comienzos del 1600, al reducir a “Arte y Vocabulario” las tres principales lenguas indígenas de antiguo Reyno de Chile: el Araucano, dominaba en su tiempo todo el Chile trasandino hasta el mismo pie de la Cordillera y, por otra parte, las dos lenguas huarpes propias de los indios de la región de Cuyo, el Allentiac y el Millcayac. Sucedida la Campaña del Desierto (1878-1885), Bartolomé Mitre retomó ese trabajo en su estudio sobre las Lenguas Americanas (1894). Mi artículo aborda estos y otros abordajes sobre el Allentiac y la cultura huarpe, desde una perspectiva autocentrada, poniéndolos en relación con los estudios realizados por Salvador Canals Frau, un etnólogo español que -huyendo del régimen franquista- se instala en la Universidad de Cuyo a fines de la década de 1940 para estudiar las comunidades indígenas argentinas.
