Ictiofauna de San Juan: Diversidad y distribución

Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to present diversity of ichthyofauna of the province of San Juan, Argentina, in order to evaluate the composition of assemblages and analyze distribution patterns. Obtained data regard to biology, ecology, taxonomy and biogeography are presented individualized by species. Twenty two species are recorded, 7 of which have been introduced primarily for sporting and/or fi shing purposes. Of these, fi ve are exotic (Carassius auratus, Cyprinus carpio, Salvelinus fontinalis, Salmo trutta y Oncorhynchu mykiss). The lack of detailed knowledge about the diversity, distribution and biology of fi sh in the province, the promotion and acceptance of exotic species (salmonids) as lucrative recreational activity and anthropogenic activities associated with wetlands are the main threats to the conservation of fi sh resources of the province.
