Media in Chile have played an important role in the history of the country, for example, the position assumed by the newspaper El Mercurio in support of General Augusto Pinochet’s 1973 coup, with implacable criticism against Salvador Allende’s democratically elected government. Nowadays, the country has among the highest per capita media consumption in Latin America, with strong penetration of radio and television, and in recent years pay-TV (cable, pay-per-view, and satellite). There is also a marked concentration in the ownership of the media.
