Repercusiones del Aislamiento Social Preventivo Obligatorio en adultos mayores. Un estudio exploratorio

Abstract

Objectives: Due to the COVID-19, many countries have taken isolation measures to reduce and avoid the spread of the virus. This research aims to provide a description of the preventive and social isolation’s consequences, according to relatives, on older people in the province of Mendoza, Argentina. Materials and methods: Quantitative cross-sectional exploratory-descriptive research. It has a sample of 65 adults from the province of Mendoza, who have regular contact with at least one older person. The research instrument was an ad-hoc questionnaire with open and ended questions that asked for socio-demographic data of interviewees, as well as cognitive, behavioral and emotional changes in the elderly. Research and conclusions: a high percentage of participants (84. 6%) reported an affectation in older people’s daily activities. At a psychological level, approximately half of the sample perceived an increase of loneliness, sadness feelings and excessive worry in elderly. Furthermore, a high percentage also reported that older people have been able to find new activities to realize during the isolation period, alone or helped by their families; and this is related to low levels of sadness. The results obtained emphasized the importance of developing preventive and intervention strategies tending towards strengthening families ties and encouraging new routines in this situation.
