Abstract

Many situations involve gravity-driven flows over substrates which may not be impervious to the passage of fluid and so should be treated as porous media. The volumetric flux of fluid through the porous bottom may, in turn, have an important effect on the structure as well as the spatiotemporal evolution of the current, affecting the rate and extent of spreading. We present here the results of laboratory experiments in which fixed volumes of a heavy fluid have been released in a rectagular cross section channel with a 1.5 cm thick permeable bottom constituted of small glass spheres, as we believe that such flows represent an appropriate paradigm for many atmospheric, oceanic, and human-made gravity currents. An analytical model describes the phenomena and provides the corresponding experimetnal scaling laws.
