Una asamblea de palabras

Abstract

En una de las obras de teatro más célebres de Shakespeare, Polonio, el consejero del rey, le pregunta al príncipe Hamlet: "¿Qué está leyendo, mi señor?". Y Hamlet le responde: "Palabras, palabras, palabras". Aunque a primera vista parece obvia y poco informativa, la respuesta de Hamlet pone de relieve la materia prima de la que están hechos no solo los textos sino también nuestra experiencia lingüística. Reconocer e identificar los significados individuales de las palabras que conforman un texto constituye una base importante a la hora de acceder al significado global del texto y, por ende, comprenderlo (Cain et al., 2003, 2004; Cain y Oakhill, 2014; Perfetti, 2007). Ahora bien, ¿qué tipo de relación existe entre el vocabulario y la comprensión de textos? ¿Es el hecho de ser un buen lector / comprendedor lo que posibilita un vocabulario rico y amplio o, en cambio, un buen dominio del vocabulario es un requisito previo y necesario para garantizar una adecuada comprensión? Cabe preguntarnos también qué entendemos por vocabulario. Concretamente: ¿dónde se encuentra almacenado nuestro conocimiento sobre las palabras? ¿De qué modo se organiza ese conocimiento? ¿Cómo accedemos a él a la hora de procesar y comprender un texto o discurso? ¿De qué manera estructuramos y enriquecemos nuestro vocabulario al adquirir una lengua? O, en otras palabras: ¿cómo se produce el desarrollo léxico en los niños pequeños? Intentaremos responder estos interrogantes en las próximas páginas.
