Los triatominos son especies exopterygotas hemimetábolos. Las hembras adultan colocan huevos de las que nacen ninfas, que deben pasar por cinco estadíos ninfales para transformarse en adultos reproductivamente aptos. Tanto las ninfas como los adultos son hematófagos obligados. Esta hematofagia obligada define muchas de las propiedades poblacionales asociadas con la distribución y comportamiento de los hospedadores que representan las principales fuentes de sangre, aunque con variaciones relacionadas con las estrategias de vida de cada especie de Tritominae.
