Abstract

The study of lithic raw materials availability and provisioning strategies in the Pali Aike volcanic field (PAVF) have been our research focus since some years ago. Several rock samplings carried out in different places of the regional landscape showed a differential availability (in abundance and spatial distribution) of some kind of rocks. These results, along with the study or artifact reduction, pointed the importance of Gallegos River and northeastern coast of Magellan strait as stone sources of provisioning, at least during late Holocene. However, when this conclusion was proposed the information about rocks availability in the Gallegos-Chico interfluve was scarce. In the present work, this lack of data is completed and new raw materials sources of fine-grained dark rocks and chalcedony are reported. The sourcing of this last rock type was unknown until present. Moreover, a nomenclature to a volcanic fine-grained dark rock type previously identified by geochemical analyses is proposed on the basis of its major abundance in Potrok Aike lagoon. Finally, information about surface artifact density recovered in the interfluve lagoons throughout transects is presented and integrated to a regional discussion. The new dataset lead us to modify some previous provisioning models and to complete the picture about PAVF and neighboring areas land-use.
