Abstract

Antes de comenzar con la descripción del Síndrome de Alzheimer y la enfermedad de Parkinson,debemos mencionar algunas generalidades comunes a las enfermedades neurodegenerativas.Estas son un grupo de enfermedades que afectan al sistema nervioso central, siendo doscaracterísticas importantes la naturaleza degenerativa y el curso crónico de las mismas. Es decir,para que comiencen a manifestarse los síntomas deben antes perderse un porcentaje de neuronasde ciertos grupos neuronales, lo cual no ocurre en forma instantánea, sino que se desarrollaprogresivamente a lo largo de la vida. Las patologías más frecuentes son el Síndrome de Alzheimery la Enfermedad de Parkinson. Sus causas no se conocen con certeza, pudiendo ser multifactorial,es decir en la patogénesis de estas enfermedades participan factores genéticos/epigeneticos,stress oxidativo, apoptosis, traumatismo encefálico antiguo, exposición a tóxicos, infecciones,alcohol, etc. Sin embargo, hoy en día, se han hecho avances en el descubriendo degenes y los mecanismos que llevan al desarrollar estas patologías. Actualmente no hay un tratamientoefectivo para la cura de estas enfermedades y esto se debe a que no existen terapias queprevengan la muerte neuronal o efectivamente induzcan la regeneración de las neuronas, por lotanto los tratamientos se encuentran abocados a mejorar el bienestar del los pacientes.
