Los ungulados de la Formación Santa Cruz

Abstract

A los mamíferos que poseen miembros alargados y que tienen la tercera falange de sus dedos cubierta con pezuñas (como vacas, ovejas y guanacos) o cascos (como los caballos) se los llama ungulados. Hace unos 17 millones de años habitó el extremo sur de la Patagonia un conjunto de especies que se cree también poseían pezuñas, a los cuales los paleontólogos llamaron notoungulados, que significa "ungulados del Sur". Estos constituyen el grupo de mamíferos más conspicuos de la fauna de aquel entonces. A diferencia de otros ungulados que habitaban en la Patagonia, los notoungulados son el grupo con mayor riqueza de especies y diversidad de formas y tamaños. Se los divide en dos grandes grupos, los toxodontos ("dientes inclinados"), entre los que se cuentan al menos cuatro especies, y los tipoterios ("bestias tipo"), conformados por unas cinco especies.
