La bilirrubina (Bb) es un pigmento tóxico e hidrofóbico derivado exclusivamente de la degradacióndel grupo hemo de las proteínas hémicas. Su toxicidad, disminuye gracias a su unión encirculación a la albumina. Cuando una proteína hémicas debe ser degradada por algún motivo,la porción peptídica se degrada a aminoácidos mientras que el grupo hemo es liberado para sertransformado en bilirrubina.
