Abstract

Por ser el metal más liviano y el elemento más electropositivo el litio es idealpara almacenar electricidad en forma química, tanto en baterías primarias comosecundarias o recargables. En solventes no acuosos la ventana de potencial esmayor que en medio acuoso y por lo tanto la energía acumulada, o sea lacapacidad de carga de la batería multiplicada por el valor medio del potencial esmuy alta y por la baja densidad del litio la densidad de energía es muy alta. Eldesarrollo de baterías de ion litio comercializada en 1991 por Sony ha impactadofuertemente en la sociedad por el enorme desarrollo de la electrónica móvil(celulares, tabletas, etc.) y la posibilidad de vehículos eléctricos de granautonomía dependerá del desarrollo de baterías de ion litio, litio-aire, litioazufre,etc.
