Los roedores de la Formación Santa Cruz

Abstract

La mayor parte de los roedores endémicos de América del Sur está representada por los caviomorfos, un grupo diverso que incluye desde especies pequeñas, como los tuco-tucos, hasta el roedor viviente más grande del mundo, el carpincho. La historia evolutiva de estos roedores quedó documentada en el registro fósil, el cual indica su presencia en nuestro continente hace por lo menos 40 millones de años. Estos mamíferos habrían ingresado desde África atravesando el Océano Atlántico, que en ese tiempo era mucho más angosto, mediante “balsas” formadas por desprendimientos de terreno. Una parte importante de su historia quedó registrada en la fauna fósil que proviene de yacimientos donde aflora la Formación Santa Cruz, un conjunto de rocas que tienen una antigüedad de entre 18 y 15 millones de años y corresponde a un segmento del tiempo geológico denominado Mioceno. En esta fauna que existió en el pasado de la provincia de Santa Cruz ya estaban representados los cuatro grandes grupos actuales.
