In this paper we suggest a different way of looking at the old debate between vitalists and mechanists by reading two of its major characters such as Xavier Bichat and Claude Bernard under a different key. The main reason to bring about this way of reading their work is to illustrate some of the loose ends that can be noticed at first glance in the movement within philosophy of science that has been called “New Mechanicism”, especially since some of its supporters have explicitly attempted to discard the notion of machine, what we take as one of the main features of the “Old Mechanicism”. As we point out, this is not fair to the epistemological fruitfulness that can be found within that old debate, its evolution and how they were affected by the notion of machine. We suggest a distinction between methodological and ontological mechanicism and some reflections about how the actual debate within the New Mechanicism may benefit from such an historical outlook.
