Abstract

Hierbas perennes, procumbentes, raíz principal leñosa, caúdice breve, terminando en un tallo principal de crecimiento indefinido y entrenudos muy breves. Hojas basales en roseta, lanceoladas u oblanceoladas, a veces ausentes a la madurez, de cuyas axilas emergen los tallos floríferos anuales, generalmente muy ramificados. Hojas caulinares opuestas, pecioladas o brevemente pecioladas; lámina lanceolada, elíptica u ovada, de margen entero. Inflorescencias globosas agrupadas a su vez en espigas, terminales, solitarias, redondeadas o elípticas, con brácteas foliáceas en la base. Flores perfectas, actinomorfas, sésiles, sostenidas por una bráctea escariosa, enervia y dos bractéolas de iguales características; sépalos 5 connados en la mitad inferior, escariosos opapiráceos, pubescentes; estambres 5, filamentos fusionados formando un tubo o cúpula estaminal la cual está soldada al perianto en casi toda su extensión, anteras monotecas; ovario libre, elipsoide, globoso, 1-ovulado, estilo breve, estigma emarginado hasta brevísimamente bífido. Fruto utrículo ovoide, generalmente comprimido, con perianto persistente. Semilla lenticular de color castaño. Género exclusivamente americano con 6 especies, las que crecen desde el sur de los Estados Unidos de América y México, Sudamérica andina y occidental, hasta el Gran Chaco, centro de la Argentina y Uruguay. En la Argentina habitan 4 especies.
