Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic changed everyday life and reconfigured the ways we live our intimacy, public space and our homes. The so-called Preventive and Compulsory Social Isolation decreed by the Argentine national government was accompanied by an economic and health crisis, disrupting the “care” and “work” activities. In this scenario, the specific and insurmountable distinctions between the public and the private spheres were affected and the intimate life began to be perceived as threatened since its antagonistic pair - the "public" - had lost its traditional space, that is, all outside the homes. According to investigations and axes of research that we have been carrying out in the Nucleus of Studies on Intimacies, Politics and Society of the National University of San Martín, in this article we analyze the implications that the pandemic had on the family and everyday life of men from middle class of Buenos Aires. We argue that the confinement made visible the porosity of the borders between the intimate and the public. The difficulty and efforts to make these two spheres coexist were expressed in the ways in which men experienced and managed spatiality and practiced care during the confinement, as well as in the way in which the space of the home and their own tasks were represented and signified as parents and workers.
