Butia, un género endémico de sudamérica

Abstract

Butia (Becc.) Becc. (Arecaceae) es un género compuesto por 24 especies. Sin embargo, debido a la complejidad de las delimitaciones taxonómicas de este género, el número de especies puede variar en la literatura (Noblick, 2014; Soares, 2015). Butia se distingue de su género ilogenéticamente más cercano Jubaea, en que el primero suele tener peciolos con espinas y sus lores presentan seis estambres en lugar de numerosos (Dransield et al., 2007). La divergencia de Jubaea y Butia parece haber ocurrido antes de 14.5 millones de años, posiblemente cuando los Andes centrales se irguieron los suficiente para separar su ancestral (Meerow et al., 2009). Este género es endémico de la región centro este de Sudamérica, estando sus especies distribuidas en los países de Argentina, Brasil, Paraguay y Uruguay (Palmweb). Algunas especies de este género, como B. odorata y B. yatay, pueden presentar numerosas y extensas poblaciones conformando peculiares ecosistemas llamados palmares o butiazais como son conocidos en Brasil (Batista et al., 2014). Por el contrario, otras especies presentan distribuciones geográicas muy restringidas como B. poni y B. pubispatha
