Abstract

This chapter discusses the importance of palm hearts in the conservation of regional diversity and in the family economy of rural populations in the north of the province of Misiones, Argentina. In relation to regional socioeconomic development, the use of the species has great potentialto represent a productive model of "conservation by use". Since the beginning of this century, its products have represented an economic income for family farmers. The largest uses assigned in Argentina correspond to food: the epicarp is used (of greater importance at present); the bud of adult plants, is used for the production of preserves (of greater importance in the past). In addition, the seeds are used for the production of ornamental plants. In the region, within a small farm there are palms in practically all productive spaces, handling is observed. Despite predatory exploitation carried out throughout history this palm tree shows a great potential as a model for sustainable management due to its commercial value to small owners and its interaction with the fauna. The palm groves could be triggers for management where forest maintenance is a productive strategy since this palm is an abundant resource with known productivity, easy to harvest and with an already established market.
